Magazine Conventions Blog

my experience of learning magazine conventions and how each one had importance was a very fun one for me. I had prior knowledge of the process because of the classes I took but I found myself to be learning new things I hadn't considered before such as coverlines and puffs that draw primary attention from the viewer.

The genre choice for my magazine was a music feature because I am very involved in my schools band and very interested in topics that include musicality in them. My magazine cover conveys that genre by having the main focal point a fellow musician in my band.

The magazine conventions used in my cover included a masthead, cover image, coverlines, a barcode, puffs, a feature article, and a dateline. All these conventions made the overall theme of my magazine cover clear by either incorporating elements that have to do with music or showcasing the performing arts aspect of the design of the cover.

A challenge I had while creating my cover was making it seem less empty, I felt the elements I added were good but left a lot of empty space that I had no idea how to fill. However after viewing other magazine covers I realized that a magazine typically isn't super cluttered as long as the important information is included on it.

Next time, when creating a magazine cover I'll make sure to include more creative elements such as little doodles that add to the cover but don't make it seem clumpy as I've observed in other magazine covers.

I think this may help with my portfolio project since I was considering creating a magazine cover for it, the experience and getting to know InDesign has prepared me for the portfolio and allowed me to figure out new and easier ways to make my project to its highest quality.
